Parents Sue Hospital after Child Born with Cerebral Palsy

Atalyah Gutbir went into labour and was admitted to Toronto General Hospital. Her baby was born in critical condition with a permanently damaged brain. The Defendant was found to have breached the standard of care because the attending nurse did not properly monitor the foetal heart rate of the baby. Due to the breach, the foetal hearbeat abnormalities were not detected, whereas detection could have prevented the injury.

Alberta Dairy Farmer with Meningitis Suffers Amputations after Delayed Treatment

61 year old dairy farmer Wayne Forsberg went to the emergency room in Leduc Community Hospital as a result of feeling ill and experiencing pain in his hands. Upon arrival, the nurse immediately identified Mr. Forsberg’s condition as urgent and contacted the attending doctor, who examined him and ordered tests. He had contracted Meningitis and required antibiotics to counter the infection.

On July 15, 2005, Laura Madonia attended at their cardiologist’s office for an electrocardiogram. Amongst other heart ailments, she suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and had a thickening of the heart muscle in the septum area of her heart. The cardiologist interpreted the results as showing atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm) and prescribed anti-coagulation medication for that condition.
